Safety Officer – Northern Cape

Purpose

Monitor workplace activities to ensure that workers comply with company policies and government safety regulations, and has a responsibility pertaining to policy development, safety inspections, safety training and compliance with Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996. Duties as per Regulation 2.19.1 read with Regulation 2.19.2 and control the production process by allocating and managing resources (people and equipment) to attain the production targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the Mining Rights Area at Kalagadi Manganese Mine with specific reflection on
  • the Engineering and Operational department and its Business Partners
  • Accountable and responsible for the compliance duties and responsibilities
  • Assist management to ensure that the working environment in your area of responsibility is safe and
  • healthy as far as reasonably practicable. You are required to take cognisance of the duties and
  • responsibilities stipulated in Regulations and 2.19.4 of the MA Regulations.
  • Responsible for monitoring and assessing hazardous and unsafe situations and developing measures to assure personnel’s safety.
  • Ensure the Site Safety and Health Plan is prepared and implemented.
  • Prevent accidents, injuries and work-related illnesses in the workplace through proper incident investigations.
  • Investigate and report of accidents or dangerous occurrences which has occurred in your area of responsibility.
  • Create and implement health and safety policies and procedures in accordance with the latest legislation and to ensure that these policies are implemented by management and employees.
  • Ensure that people are doing jobs that they are trained and appointed for.
  • Conduct legal inspections (30,45 & 90 day) on site and report deviations.
  • Ensure all employees are inducted prior to be permitted to work on site. The induction will inform all employees pertaining to the hazards prevalent on site, and training in the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ensure no sub-contractor is permitted to work on site without being in possession of a safety file.
  • Facilitate the risk assessment process, be able to compile safe working procedure and method statement
  • from scratch and on an on-going basis to identify and evaluate the risks to which employees may be exposed to.
  • Hold safety meetings as required.
  • Report writing.
  • Conducting of audits.

 

Minimum requirements

    • 5 Years’ experience as a Safety Officer.
  • 4 Years’ experience as Legal Document Coordinator / SHE Administrator.
  • Grade 12.
  • COMSOC 1.
  • COMSOC 2.
  • Introduction to SAMTRAC.
  • SAMTRAC for Mining (Advantageous).
  • Mechanical/Electrical trade certificate (Advantageous).
  • National Diploma in Safety Management (Advantageous).
  • Occupational Health and Safety Training.
  • Train the Trainer (ITIS).
  • Legal liability Training.
  • Risk Assessment Training.
  • Incident Management Training.
  • A valid code B/EB driver’s licence.
  • Medically fit for duty
  • Understanding of the MHSA act 29 of 1996.
  • Understanding of a HSE system.

 

Skills and Knowledge

  • Computer Literate (MS Office)
  • Computer aided draughting (CAD)
  • Laser scanning software knowledge
  • Surveying calculation software knowledge for underground and surface
  • Basic Fire Fighting
  • Basic First Aid
